Increased Investment for Green Initiative
The Xunta de Galicia in Spain has significantly increased its investment to €25 million for the construction and management of the country’s first public textile recycling plant. This move reflects the region’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and waste management.
Operational Timeline and Compliance
The plant, set to be operational by June 2026, will process textile waste from social – economic entities and street – side collection containers. Alfonso Rueda, the President of the regional government, announced that it will be Galicia’s first public – owned facility and will comply with new European regulations.
Funding Sources and Tender Details
The initial investment projection was €14 million in early October 2024. The additional funds will cover the construction, with up to €10.2 million coming from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, which aims to promote economic sustainability in member states. The management of the plant will also be put out for tender for an initial two – year period, with the option to extend for another two years.
Processing and Capacity Expansion
Once operational, the plant will develop a procedure to classify textile waste according to its material composition. After sorting, the materials will be sent to recycling centers to be transformed into products such as textile fibers or insulation materials. Initially, it will be able to handle 3,000 tons of waste per year, with the capacity to increase to 24,000 tons in the long run.
Meeting Obligations and Promoting Circular Economy
This project is crucial as it helps local municipalities meet their obligations, starting from January 1st, to separately collect and classify textile waste within the framework of the Waste and Contaminated Soils Act. By doing so, Galicia is taking a major step towards reducing textile waste in landfills and promoting a circular economy. The opening of this plant is expected to set an example for other regions in Spain and Europe in dealing with the growing issue of textile waste.
Nonwoven Fabrics: A Green Choice
In the context of Galicia’s textile recycling drive, Nonwoven fabrics is a green choice. They are highly sustainable. Bio-Degradable PP Nonwoven achieve true ecological degradatio, reducing long – term waste. Their production also consumes less energy. These fabrics are a boon for the environment, aligning perfectly with the green initiatives.
